De slavernij-handel van Nederland

Het centrum van de slavernij-handel vanuit Nederland was gevestigd in de stad Middelburg. Hier heeft men nog als aandenken een gedenkteken met de volgende tekst: 

The slavery trade in the Netherlands

The center of the slavery trade from the Netherlands was located in the city of Middelburg. Here one still has a memorial with the following text:

TRANSATLANTISCHE SLAVENHANDEL

 

  • Tussen 1580-1809 zijn circa 12,5 miljoen mensen door Europese landen van Afrika naar Noord –en Zuid-Amerika overgebracht en daar als slaaf of slavin verhandeld.

Vanaf het einde van de 17e eeuw nam de Zeeuwse betrokkenheid bij de slavenhandel sterk toe.

Naar schatting namen de Zeeuwen bijna de helft, zijnde 268 503 personen, van alle door de Nederlanders vervoerde slaven letterlijk voor hun rekening.

De transatlantische slavenhandel wordt ook wel driehoekshandel genoemd.

De schepen vertrokken vol met handelsgoederen uit de Europse havens, naar de westkust van Afrika, waar de schepen werden omgebouwd om de slaven te kunnen vervoeren naar Amerika.

Het monument staat midden op de Balans, een historische plaats tussen het Abdijcomplex en de panden  Balans 25.

Balans 27, achter het hek, was het grootste pakhuis van de MCC (Middelburgse Commercie Compagnie).

In dit pakhuis werden de met slavenarbeid verkregen producten, suiker, tabak en koffie opgeslagen en geveild.

In de St. Jorisdoelen (Balans 25) zetelden tientallen jaren de bestuurders van de MCC.

 

Slavernij ontstaat wanneer de ene mens over de andere mens denkt te kunnen beschikken en daar desnoods inkomen uit kan krijgen op een niet werkelijk liefdevolle manier. Zij laten andere mensen voor hun werken. Het tot slaaf maken is een oude traditie in Nederland geweest waar we zeker nog de gevolgen van ondervinden en vaak doen alsof het nooit gebeurd is. Zo blijven Nederlands vaak ook nu nog heel erg koppig het bestaan van zwarte Piet verdedigen. Het wordt nu allemaal  geen slavernij meer genoemd. Maar je kunt echt zeggen dat hier nog steeds sprake van is in situaties waarin  "rijke mensen"  in "rijke landen" veelal met goedkoop en enigszins verachtelijk vermaak  hun zonde proberen af te kopen. Iets dat uiteraard nimmer zal lukken en in de Bijbel zeer treffend geduid wordt met het kruipen van een kameel door het oog van een naald.

 

 

 

TRANSATLANTIC SLAUGHTER TRADE

  • Between 1580-1809, around 12.5 million people were transported by European countries from Africa to North and South America and traded there as slaves or slaves.

From the end of the 17th century, Zeeland's involvement in the slave trade increased sharply.

It is estimated that the Zeeland population literally accounted for nearly half, being 268 503 people, of all slaves transported by the Dutch.

The transatlantic slave trade is also called triangular trade.

The ships left full of trade goods from the European ports, to the west coast of Africa, where the ships were converted to be able to transport the slaves to America.

The monument stands in the middle of the Balans, a historic site between the Abbey complex and the Balans 25 buildings.

Balance 27, behind the fence, was the largest warehouse of the MCC (Middelburgse Commercie Compagnie).

In this warehouse the products obtained from slave labor, sugar, tobacco and coffee were stored and auctioned.

For decades, MCC directors sat in the St. Jorisdoelen (Balance 25).

 

 

Slavery arises when one person thinks he can dispose of another person and if necessary can get income from it in a way that is not really loving. They let other people work for them. Enslaving has been an old tradition in the Netherlands where we will certainly still experience the consequences and often pretend it never happened. For example, the Dutch often still very stubbornly defend the existence of BLACK PIET. None of many Dutch will call this a rember to slavery. But you can honestly say that this sign is still true in situations where "rich people" in "rich countries" often try to buy off their sin with cheap and somewhat despicable entertainment. Something that will of course never succeed and is very aptly indicated in the Bible with the crawling of a camel through the eye of a needle.
